BU students who study with Yo-EL Cassell, a College of Fine Arts School of Theatre assistant professor say his demanding movement classes improve their confidence and deepen their understanding of how crucial movement is to acting. Cassell discovered movement as a hearing-impaired child and says his hearing loss allowed him to connect to senses like touch more deeply.
In the video above, School of Theatre assistant professor of movement Yo-EL Cassell spontaneously generates a movement piece with eight students from his freshman movement practicum.
At the beginning of each December for the past 18 years, the BU Department of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance has upheld its collaborative production of AURORA BOREALIS: A FESTIVAL OF LIGHT & DANCE. The annual production is supported by the BU CFA School of Theatre Season Calendar, and sees full audiences from across the community at the FitRec Dance Theatre (915 Commonwealth Ave - Fitness & Recreation Center).
Yo-el Cassell and Micki Taylor-Pinney have participated as the artistic co-directors for the productions in years past, engaging with students from various departments in BU, as well as directing a uniquely student devised performance by School of Theatre students.
See media from past productions below and stay tuned for upcoming announcements for 2019!
